Review: Coming Out! FT Island

FT Island Comes Back with New Album and New Reality TV Show

My K-Pop/Rock group will always be first and foremost, FT Island. The five member group comprised of lead singer Lee Hong Ki, leader and lead guitarist Choi Jong Hun, vocals and bass guitarist Lee Jae Jin, vocals and guitarist Song Seung Hyun and drummer Choi Min Hwan are just about the goofiest and adorable band I have ever seen.

Watching them grow over the years, you see them handle different issues. From the day to day annoyances a group faces as they start out together, to creative differences in establishing their own voice in their industry, to figuring out if they are going to have a future together. (This last one really scared me, let me tell you.)

Now, almost a decade later, they've come back not only with their newest Korean album "I Will", and also a new reality TV show called, "Coming Out! FT Island".

This review of the first couple of episodes is a little late. I am having a hard time finding episodes online and the most current episodes haven't been posted to Daily Motion, yet, so I apologize.

The reality show is nothing out of the ordinary. It follows the everyday lives of this group. What's interesting about this is that it's the first one the group has agreed to do in years. (Although, I must note that they were featured pretty prominently in 2014's Cheongdamdong 111 which showcased the artists of FNC Entertainment.)

As Korean groups go, they can choose to stay in a dorm room together, or branch out to live on their own. In the first episode, it shows the different homes of each of the five members. All of them, with the exception of Seung Hyun, are living on their own. Seung Hyun seems to still be at home with his parent(s) as they show him being woken up for work by his mom.

It really delves into the background lives of each of the members. Hong Ki shows off his wardrobe and his outings with friends where he finds comfort in having a few drinks with them and have a sense of normalcy. Jong Hun shows off his guitars and his love of the outdoors. Jae Jin...hmmm, not sure what he does that one. Except that he takes a long time to get ready just to go out and eat. Seung Hyun is busy with activities, but is still living at home. And Min Hwan is a full-time gamer who finds time to make ramyun.

It seems that FT Island really had taken a vacation from their promotions after they came back from Japan. And now that they have a new album, it seems difficult to wrangle them together to practice.

Jong Hun, as the leader, has the difficult task of trying to call everyone together for a rehearsal. (He does it by text of all things! Why not just use the cell to call?) One by one, each respond and accept the practice date at time....except for Hong Ki who is out drinking with his friends. He doesn't respond until everyone is at practice and kind of blows them off. Understandably, he wants to have fun. But at the same time, I worry that he really isn't upholding his role in the group. It looks like his activities have really put a strain on everyone, especially the young maknaes.

Each of the members speak about how it's been hard to keep visible since their Japan activities. Express frustration about how it really depends on how Hong Ki is doing and feeling. They really haven't been able to do much without him. (He is their lead singer, after all.) They all voice the concerns about whether they want to stay together as a group and that it's been difficult being all different places.

To fix the problem, or maybe start the healing process, the company approached the group with the opportunity to dorm together for a few days.

The dorm they are placed in is really a two bedroom condo. And quite large from what I could see. They all jockey for a sleeping spot. Hong Ki and Jong Hun, being the elders, take over the largest room for themselves. Jae Jin and Min Hwan end up in the other room, with Seung Hyun taking up the floor in Hong Ki and Jong Hun's room. Poor maknae.

In honor of their first mean, Hong Ki volunteers to cook. Eh? Really? Anyone remember his stew he served to his wife on We Got Married? It wasn't very....elaborate...just saying.

Hong Ki and Min Hwan go out grocery shopping for the necessary ingredients and it's hilarious how Min Hwan kept trying to put other things in the cart and Hong Ki puts it back. Yet when it came to alcohol, there was no debate or argument and Hong Ki put it into the cart.

Hong Ki cooks up a meal of sauteed meat and veggies which he actually really looked at ease putting together. In comparison to his bumblings in the kitchen when he made a spicy stew for his onscreen wife, he was put together this time around. He served it up to his members and they enjoy it together.

At first, the camaraderie seems to be back to normal. But annoyances surface again when everyone leaves for their activities, except for the two youngins. And Jong Hun comes home to cook seafood stew only to find that they have already eaten. Yea...you can tell he was mad. And you don't want to make your leader man. Especially when he had just bought all expensive seafood ingredients to put into his special stew. They pretty much ate without the rest of the group. Something called "consideration" wasn't there.

And that's where my video ended, with tensions arising once again in the group. I like that this show is censored, yet it still shows the more mature side of the guys. Hence, the 19+ rating.

It's nice to see what they really are thinking. It's a little unnerving that there seems to be so much tension. They don't seem to be as tight of a group as before. And they are definitely more opinionated now.  (Btw, you really should check out Jae Jin's waxing ritual that he takes Min Hwan on.)

Sigh, I will need to find more english subbed versions. If anyone has a good site, let me know!

FT Island to Release 6th Mini Album!

It was announced though their official Facebook site that the handsome K-PopRock group, FT Island, will be releasing their 6th and newest Korean mini album titled, "Thanks To"!

As a sort of tribute to their fans, the five have embarked on a tour specially for the fans who have given them so much support called, "FTHX" or FT Thanks. It seems that they've translated this to their new anniversary album as well.

They will be doing a Q and A on their Facebook site from September 9th through 13th. Fans will be able to post a question and the members will select questions to answer personally. The answers will be posted when the album releases on September 23rd.

Post post post!

So excited to see what the questions and answers will be. (Btw, please be thoughtful and respectful in your questioning.)

CNBlue and FT Island at Summer Sonic 2013

FNC Artists CNBlue (Top) and FT Island (Bottom) circa 2012
FNC is promoting both of their top artists once again! K-PopRock groups CNBlue and FT Island have been selected as the South Korean representatives and will be performing at the Summer Sonic concert in Japan on August 10th and August 11th.

These two have basically made FNC popular in the K-Pop mainsteam with their more edgier rock type of tunes and soulful voices. Not to mention both groups have men full of youthful energy and charisma.

They will be performing with a lineup of superstars such as Muse (FT Island's Leader Choi Jong Hun likes to listen to them a lot!), Linkin Park (one of my personal faves) and Metallica!

Summer Sonic tickets for the July 11th show are already sold out. Get them while they're still available if you can!

FT Island in Animated Film "Toriko"

I haven't been posting a lot in the past couple of months since I've been busy at work, so I apologize. I'm slowly starting to get back into trying to post at least a couple per week. And of course, in order to do that, I have to keep up with the news.

Well, as I was browsing through the internet, I came across a news article about FT Island. (I have to confess, I pretty much only look at K-pop and Asian culture news when I'm trying to relax.)

Seems that they will be again lending their musical talents to another anime (this time a movie) called "Toriko". They will be singing the ending song to the movie. The anime is by Mitsutoshi Shimabukuro and will feature this character, Toriko, on his adventures all around the world.

FT Island will also be featured in the movie as themselves. They have really handsome likenesses to each member! Some anime don't stay true to the real people, but I really like the way the artists drew them. (see photo)

I believe this will be the first time they will be featured in a movie of this sort. The last time they had a hand in an anime was when they had done the song, "Neverland" for the opening theme song to the anime series, "Ozuma" in early 2012.

So proud of these guys!

Review: FT Island's New Japanese Single "You Are My Life"

Here I go again, FT Islanding up my blog! For fans and Pri's, the next musical chapter in these 5 treasures' career is coming up very soon. They will be releasing a new Japanese single called, "You Are My Life".

It's soft rock ballad that starts off with leader Choi Jong Hun on the piano and moving throughout. Mixed with Seung Hyun's rock chords on guitar, Jae Jin's back-up harmonies and Hong Ki's vocals carrying the simple melodic line, it's certainly touching and sentimental. "Listen to my heart...Even till this day, even when you are far away from me...You are my life..." (Sorry, my Japanese is a little rusty. I still have a hard time gathering gists of songs in Japanese, especially slow songs because they break up the syllables. And it's been years since I tried to speak semi-fluently. I'll try to post the English subs when they're available.)

I, for one, love this song. Not just because it's FT Island and Lee Hong Ki, but I like the types of songs that you can listen to and know the theme of the song just by listening to the music. Even though it's in a different language, it touches your soul.

Here's the video released by Warner Music Japan. All right's to them and FT Island. I wish they sold the music on iTunes in the States, but this will have to do.

Video: FT Island's Year in Review by Mnet

FT Island Bundled Up (Don't own this pic)

Thought I'd share this with all my fellow FT Island fans.

It's a year in review that Mnet had thrown together. It's funny, I'm watching the video as I type and all I see is their most recent single, "I Wish". Where's everything else? Like their songs "Severely", "Top Secret", "Stay"?

Despite that, there are some funny clips of the guys in this video.

Check it out here.

Commentary: Why FT Island?

If you've read my other posts, you will notice that I write a lot about FT Island. I am an unofficial Primadonna. Yep, I said it. They are one of my favorite artists right now.

Honestly, I used to be a die hard SS501 fan, and a big fan of Kim Hyun Joong. But when they "disbanded", it just wasn't the same anymore. They will always sound better as one to me, none of this solo activities crunk.

So...I started searching for another K-Pop group. Which was kind of hard to do since most of them danced to techno or cutesy music. Anyways, I was at home, sick, re-watching "You're Beautiful" starring the one and only Jang Geun Suk and Park Shin Hye. I was thinking of what a shame it was that Go Minam ended up with Hwang Tae Kyung instead of Shin Woo when the scene, where a karaoke singing Go Minam gets soaked up on stage, comes on.

To save a bit of face, one of the A.N.Jell members, Jeremy (Lee Hong Ki), takes over on "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer" and goes to stand next to Minam onstage. She is joined by Shin Woo (Jung Yong Hwa) and Tae Kyung (Jang Geun Suk) who wraps a tablecloth around the shivering Minam. Btw, that moment where he rips the tablecloth off the table is so gallant.

It got me thinking, Shin Woo and Jeremy actually sing pretty well. I wondered if they were multi-talented as well. So I did a bit of Google searching on them and found out that they were members of two groups (CNBlue and FT Island) under FNC Entertainment. Interesting that two FNC artists were acting together in the same drama.

This led me to a couple of their videos. CNBlue's "Oettoriya" (Loner) and "Jidokhagae" (Severely) by FT Island.

CNBlue's M/V of "Oettoriya" was a bit confusing for me, I don't think I got the concept as clearly as I would have liked. But the song was very catchy.

FT Island's "Severely" was a different story. Let me back up a bit and just say that the first thing I saw on YouTube for this M/V was a comment from a viewer saying "Noooo! Hong Ki!" or something to that effect. I thought, what the heck is this about?

I watched the video and I understood. Right from the beginning, that scratched in guitar intro had me hooked. The music was strong and powerful and the music video was so heart wrenching. I got immediately that Hong Ki's character was trying to go back in time to change things. (I wish he wouldv'e tried harder, but that's all moot now.)

I thought to myself, this is what I have been looking for. I was sick and tired of hearing the same sort of country and R & B and Pop music in American pop culture. Same songs that the stations feed us over and over and over. Blech!

Finally, there was a K-Pop group I could relate to. None of this dance club upbeat techno crunk. Their sound was unique, raw, real and downright emotional. I connected with their music on this level and also as a musician. They looked like they really loved what they did, that's something that's rarely seen in American music nowadays so I really appreciated that.

From there, I wanted to know everything about Lee Hong Ki, Choi Jong Hun, Lee Jae Jin, Choi Min Hwan and Song Seung Hyun. I read articles, I watched videos, listened to their music, watched them on variety shows. There was loads of information on the internet about them and they were hilarious! Just as I imagined a band of brothers would be. (Now granted, CNBlue was also all over the internet, but they weren't promoting as much at that time.)

All this while being sick in bed for a few weeks. Such a short time to convert, haha. In a way, I hated being sick, but in a way, I am glad I was. I found hope in music again.

FT Island, kahmsahabnida!

Video: FT Island's Relationships

FT Island's vocalist, Lee Hong Ki, tweeted a video from his account yesterday that I just wanted to share.

I think everyone who is a fan knows that the super popular members are Lee Hong Ki, Choi Jong Hun and Lee Jae Jin. In interviews, it was usually said that Jong Hun is the Casanova, which to this day he still vehemently states that he is not (it's not the image he's trying to portray).

Well..what if Jong Hun was telling the truth??

In this interview, Lee Hong Ki is actually the one with the most scandals. But the public normally doesn't hear about it because the agency keeps it mum.

I had to laugh at the embarrassment that Hong Ki was going through. And honestly, Jae Jin was also very funny with his impersonations. Also, who knew that Choi Min Hwan, their drummer, would be such a squealer??

Take a look at the video. If you can't understand Korean, one of the commentators left a link to a transcription of sorts to the video. Disclosure: I don't own the video and I do not claim any rights to it.

Enjoy!

Song Review: FT Island's "Your Words"

Here's my 2nd review of a song off of FT Island's "Five Treasure Box" album called "Your Words".

The gist of it: Near as I can tell from what I can read and of the translations, it's a song about patient love. A heartbroken person refusing to leave his/her love behind and move on.

Breaking it down:
It starts off with a bold guitar intro, setting the pace and tone. Light string picking and thrumming throughout the verses. A very emotional song, a song that is all too familiar with those that have loved.

My take on this:
Again, a very emotional song and one of my favorites on the album. Lee Hong Ki's voice carries the melody throughout with the same emotion, soaring through the chorus. The song itself is very repetitious, the chorus repeats at least four or more times with only a couple of verses. Frankly, this sound was what I was expecting to hear from FT Island, a more mature sound with loads of experience, and I certainly get that feeling here. However, I feel that younger listeners may get bored with it.

Here's the lyrics:

English Translation:

My expectations have become exhausted because of always waiting and longing
My hopes have been dulled because of these common tears and common hatred
My love has wandered through a long time and old memories
It grows dusty and faint so even without you, I can withstand it

I’ll never leave you, your faint words
I’ll never leave you, your discarded words
My broken heart, my clenched heart is breaking down and disappearing
I’ll never leave you, your forgotten words
I’ll never leave you, words I repeat by myself

Like tears that fall during pouring rain, it hazily disappears
I spent a day lingering by the same place, by the same path
I’m getting used to the cold moonlight that touches my cheek even without you

I’ll never leave you, your faint words
I’ll never leave you, your discarded words
My broken heart, my clenched heart is breaking down and disappearing
I’ll never leave you, your forgotten words
I’ll never leave you, words I repeat by myself
Like tears that fall during pouring rain, it hazily disappears

I’ll never leave you, your faint words
I’ll never leave you, your discarded words
My broken heart, my clenched heart is breaking down and disappearing
I’ll never leave you, your faint words
I’ll never leave you, your discarded words
My broken heart, my clenched heart is breaking down and disappearing
I’ll never leave you, your forgotten words
I’ll never leave you, words I repeat by myself
Like tears that fall during pouring rain, it hazily disappears

Song Review: FT Island's "I Wish" (Updated)

I told myself I would do a review on FT Island's "Five Treasure Box" album. But, after reflecting a little bit, I felt it was a little bit too long to put all of it into one post. Here is just a review of their title song, "I Wish" which they also have a music video out on.

The gist of it: A man wishes he was the object of a certain woman's affections.

Breaking it down:
The song starts off with an acoustic spanish style guitar lick which is intermingled with a lone, pure toned, trumpet playing in the background. At times the guitar and trumpet duel with each other in a call/answer type of style.

The melody is upbeat which I like, and I must say a total contrast to the lyrics which is full of angst and longing. The music (going along with the lyrics) starts a bit softly and timidly, swelling into a strong pop/rock style at the chorus when the rest of the members join in on their instruments.

My take on this:
It's an interesting song. Again, like I said in my review of the video, not as mature sounding as their previous title song, "Severely" (Jidokhagae) off of their "Grown Up" album. What I like about it is that it is very different from the cutesy techno pop dance music that is out there. It's the type of song that I would definitely play in my car (and have been since I got the album). And being that I'm not much of a dancer (I can move, but not as fluidly as some others), I am just fine doing my own kind of rocking out to this.

Bassist Lee Jae Jin surprises in a not so often heard rap in here. Usually Song Seung Hyun has the honor of doing the rapping. Jae Jin's voice continues to be softer and innocent in sound, his style is completely different from Seung Hyun's and contemporary English rapping which tend to be quicker and staccato.

Vocal Lee Hong Ki continues to impress with his husky voice during the verses and belting out strong during the chorus. As always, his voice packs emotion behind the lyrics.

Leader Choi Jong Hun always impresses with his deft guitar playing, as does Choi Min Hwan on the drums.

Although this isn't one of my favorites on the album, it definitely has what it takes to stick to people. It's catchy, it has a universal message, and the voice is awesome.

Here's the lyrics (both Romanized and English):

English Translation:

You’re so pretty, I want you
You’re so nice, I want you
I usually don’t look at girls but why am I acting this way, like a fool?
Every single day, I only think of you
Even when I close my eyes, I only think of you
Each time I see you, my heart trembles and I can’t breathe

Baby, I wish it was me, I wish it was so
Lonely lonely oh my love
I wish your love was me uh uh uh uh uh uh
Baby, I wish it was me, I wish it was so
Lonely lonely oh, love me
I don’t wanna be alone anymore uh uh uh I love you

Even when I’m meeting someone else, I only see you
Even when I’m thinking about something else, I only see you
Even when I see someone else, I have no interest
Why am I acting this way, like a fool?
I guess it’s love – I can’t catch a wink of sleep
I guess I love you – I keep thinking of you
When I meet you, I get happy like a kid

Baby, I wish it was me, I wish it was so
Lonely lonely oh my love
I wish your love was me uh uh uh uh uh uh
Baby, I wish it was me, I wish it was so
Lonely lonely oh, love me
I don’t wanna be alone anymore uh uh uh I love you

(Rap)
I love you, love me – believe me, believe me
I can do anything for you uh uh uh
No matter how much you try to find someone special
No matter how much you try to find someone like me, there won’t be anyone else
Can you see my heart? Can you hear my heart?
Please accept my pure love oh
I’m here, waiting and waiting for you
I only love you alone

Baby, I wish it was you, I wish it was so
Love me love me, oh look at me
I wish my other half was you uh uh uh uh uh uh
Baby, I wish it was you, I wish it was so
Love me love me, oh I love you
If it’s not you, I don’t wanna be in love uh uh uh I love you
Baby, I wish it was me, I wish it was so
Lonely lonely oh, love me
I don’t wanna be alone anymore uh uh uh I love you

FT Island Sentimental at Fan Event

I wanted to share this article that I saw tonight on AllKpop.

It was about, one of my fave's, FT Island, at their latest fan signing event at Youngdeungpo Times Square.

Photo Credit: AllKpop via Naver and Chosun News
What immediately caught my eye was how happy the fellas looked. They were smiling genuinely, it seems, and they were even acting a little bit silly. (Hong Ki was wearing a black and purple polka dotted bat head band. Perfect for Halloween!) Indeed they looked like they were having a good time.

They later commented: It was fun and great to meet that many fans up close. We are so thankful to our fans who always worry about us and give us so much love“.

So sweet... I'm sure their Korean fans in attendance were very happy.
