TV: End of Year Specials 2012

Be on the lookout for content to come out on the web on the end of year specials by each broadcast network.

For all you FT Island and CN Blue fans, they will be doing special stages.

The MBC Gayo Daejun, for example, will feature FT Island, CN Blue and Juniel performing Bruno Mars' "Just the Way You Are".

It sucks that most of the world can't watch it live, but I'm still looking forward to it!

The Romantic and the Idol

The second season for this surprisingly popular South Korean show begins tonight on December 30th.

Participating in this season are: G.NA, Jewelry's Yewon, SPICA's Jiwon, and TWO X's Eunyoung, F.T. Island's Jong Hoon, BtoB's Minhyuk, VIXX' N and ZE:A's Kevin.

To drum up some anticipation for the broadcast, Jong Hoon went to tweeting on his account:

"@FtGtJH: 30일 더로맨틱 방송이에요 :) tvn 에서 봅시다 !"
(More romance on the 30th on TvN) *sorry, literal translation

It'll be interesting to see how the 2nd season goes. I can't speak for the past season (since I didn't watch it) or for any of the other idols, but I did watch Jong Hoon's Mnet Scandal appearance and he was a hands on type of person. He didn't initiate most of the skinship, but he allowed it (holding hands, kissing on lips) which was, well, scandalous. I wonder how his fans will or will not take it. Haha. I bet a bunch are going to go "Nooooo!" If he kisses someone.

Honestly, I didn't know Korea had reality shows like this. From all the Koreans I've talked to, shows are usually clean and family friendly. But the concept of this show is to bring these idols together in a secluded area, throw them together in dating situations and see if any pairs match up. Very, very American. It sounds like "Big Brother" meets "Real World".

It'll also be interesting to see how idols date. It's hard for them to date with their busy schedules, and some haven't even been in serious relationships. I wonder if these guys even know how to go beyond all the cheesiness and be able to act themselves?

Which brings me to my one complaint about this show. How often do idols date each other? Is this even really realistic? I think I liked Mnet Scandal more since it paired stars with supposedly regular people. This whole show sounds like practice.

I only hope that Jong Hoon doesn't make his date wait like he did before.

To all the idols, hwaiting! Let's see how they do!

Hong Ki and Heechul Get Festive With Nails

If you follow K-Pop, you know that Lee Hong Ki of FT Island and Heechul of Super Junior are close buds. So it's no surprise to find out that these two had gone out and gotten..couple nails!

In preparation of the upcoming Christmas holiday, both had gone to a nail salon and gotten their nails decorated in a Christmas style.

True to his nickname, "Hong Star" got his nails decorated with skulls (he's aka "Skullhong" in the Twitter world).

How truly festive and cute! Slightly eery with the skulls, but still festive!

I love when guys do things together that you don't normally see. Now granted, in some countries, this may be odd. But in Korea, or rather Asian cultures, things like this are accepted. So, don't go getting any ideas if you know what I mean.

Since these guys started it, I found a quick nail decorating video to go with the theme of nail decorating. Let me know if you tried it. Lord knows that I totally suck at nail decorating. But I love to see other people's nails. =)

Samgyetang- Korean Chicken with Ginseng Soup

Recently, Siwon of Super Junior tweeted a pic of samgyetang soup. Samgyetang is a Korean chicken and rice soup with ginseng, jujubes, and garlic. Lots of garlic.

I remember a friend of mine raving about the samgyetang she had in Busan when she had visited earlier this year. It also happens to be a favorite dish of one of my favorite idols, Hong Ki of FT Island.

The picture that Siwon tweeted along with the description from my friend had me looking up the recipe.

Photo Courtesy of Choi Siwon's Twitter
Now, I love to cook. And I like to cook as authentically as possible. If there's any inkling that a recipe may be otherwise, I move on. Lucky for me, there's YouTube. I happened to see this Korean ahjumma demonstrating dukkbokki in one video and found she had one for samgyetang. Hallelujah! Can't go wrong. It's simple with only a few ingredients. The only thing that kinda makes me squeamish is the whole ginseng root. But apparently to all Koreans, it's a necessity and it's good for you. Otherwise it would just be chicken soup.

Now that the weather is colder, I'm going to be making this. And hopefully post a review on this, unless I eat it too fast. I hear you're supposed to eat this in the summer, but I would love this to warm me up on a cold winter day.

Here's the video, you can also find it on Maangchi's page. (Of course I don't take credit nor own the video and any pictures on this post.) Check out the other recipes too on http://www.maangchi.com. Then come back to see a review, or let me know how yours turned out. Enjoy!

Happy Birthday Jae Jin!

It's already past his birthday in Korea, but Lee Jae Jin of FT Island celebrated his 21st birthday on December 17th.

I've been wondering what happened to this guy for the past week, but he turned up today on Leader Choi Jong Hun's Twitter in a pic.

In the image, he is shown blowing a kiss.

Happy birthday Jae Jin, you older goat! Lol!

Love one another

Taking the page directly from my friends blog, with their permission of course and reposting her thoughts on a tragedy that just happened today:

In the US, we have gone through another day of completely senseless tragedy.

Today, in the little town of Newton, Connecticut, a 20-year old boy opened fire in an elementary school classroom killing 20 kindergarten children and 6 adults including himself and his mother (not on scene).

I have to ask myself why? How does this make any sense?

Little children anxious to go on Christmas break, waiting to see what their parents bought them, ready to rip open presents under the tree. Simply gone. Without any rhyme or reason.

The world that we live in has changed so dramatically. Ten, maybe twenty years ago, we worried about strangers kidnapping kids. Now we have to question if even the most innocent lives are safe in a place we thought they were the most safest in.

We get so caught up in our lives, the day to day grind. Or studying. Or even going gaga over the latest scandal over a star, tweeting their adoration. Do we even take a look around at who matters the most to us?

I bet those that rushed off without hugging their brother or sister, parents that promised to take their kids somewhere nice after school was done, or not even taking the time to say simple words of endearment, are looking back with regret.

What I'm trying to say is always remember to take a step back and remind yourself of your priorities. Cherish your memories with each other, whether it be a sibling, spouse, parents or children. And tell them, nay, show them, how much you love them. Someone else may take the opportunity away from you.

Video: FT Island's Year in Review by Mnet

FT Island Bundled Up (Don't own this pic)

Thought I'd share this with all my fellow FT Island fans.

It's a year in review that Mnet had thrown together. It's funny, I'm watching the video as I type and all I see is their most recent single, "I Wish". Where's everything else? Like their songs "Severely", "Top Secret", "Stay"?

Despite that, there are some funny clips of the guys in this video.

Check it out here.

Get Ready for 2PM!

2PM (Don't own this pic)

Sorry, I haven't been able to blog as much as I would like to, but every so often I see some things that catch my eye, so in case you all miss it, I'm relaying it to you. =)

If you are a fan of 2PM's music, or even a "HOTTEST", you are already in the know. But here's the news...

Fresh off of their "What Time Is It?" tour, they announced that they are making a comeback as early as January 2013! Yay!

This is awesome since they are now in pretty much full force with Nichkhun back to participate in their promotional activities. I like Nichkhun, I've been a fan of his ever since he was on "We Got Married" with his partner, Victoria. (Funny as heck series that you should really Google, by the way! All of the seasons!) It was a shame when he had that DUI earlier this summer, and I'm glad it wasn't too serious and that he has had time to reflect.

So anyways, fans get ready, stay tuned for when their comeback date is! You don't want to miss them!

Where's Lee Jae Jin on Twitter?

I know there are some FT Island fans that read my posts.

Anyone know if their bassist Lee Jae Jin closed his Twitter account? He's not my bias, but I do like his voice and he was on my very short list of people I'm following. And he's not showing up anymore. Not even in any searches.

Can anyone tell me what's going on?

His handle was @saico011.

Psy Not Nominated for Grammy

Ok, I felt the need to talk about this especially since the MAMAs aired recently.

I saw a post about Psy not being nominated for a Grammy and some were a little disgruntled.

Why should it matter if he was or was not nominated? Hasn't he proven to the world that he's one of the best artists of our time?

I'm sure there is something in the requirements that to qualify for nomination for a Grammy, majority of the song must be in English. I mean, did you see any English artists at the MAMAs?

My point is that Psy doesn't need to be nominated for every music award out there. He's doing more than fine on his own.

Severe flooding in several provinces with at least 200 dead and the toll climbing.

Will the Cast of "Glee" Be Able to Pull Off Psy?

This is what I'm wondering after seeing AllKpop's article on this.

ABC's hit musical drama, "Glee", will be airing their take on Psy's famous hit, "Gangnam Style".

Everyone has done the horse dance by now. Why not the cast of "Glee", too?

Cast admits it was a challenge learning the song in Korean. Let's see what America, the world, and especially the Koreans think about this latest copy.

Just remember, mimicry is the most sincerest way to compliment someone.

Seung Hyun, Are You Single?

Song Seung Hyun

That was the question that FT Island's Lee Hong Ki posed to the younger Song Seung Hyun on the show "All the K-Pop". (Goodness Hong Ki, can you not put anyone on the spot like that? Lol!)

To which, he answered, while looking very flustered, "yes, I have a girlfriend."

Now, Primadonnas and fans all over are wondering if this is a "my fans are my girlfriend" kind of moment, or if this is indeed the truth.

No one will really know except the lovable Song Sari and the rest of FT Island.

All I know is I hope he will be happy and not, "lonely lonely" like the lyrics to "I Wish" goes.

Chukhaeyo Song Sari!

Fans will keep on dreaming about the rest of FT Island. You know, those talented, funny and sexy men. =D

Happy Thanksgiving from the Fab Filorean!

As the United States gives thanks this day, I am grateful to all of you that have come back and read my posts and also thankful to all of you that have stopped by for the first time.

You all have given me a reason to continue this creative outlet of mine. I'm so happy to know that there are others out there that share in my enthusiasm for Korean culture, dramas and music. (Lately, it's been mostly FT Island, sorry!) I hope you all have a wonderful holiday season, God bless you!

And, of course to continue on my FT Island kick, here's a photo that was tweeted today by their leader, Choi Jong Hun. I think it's an old pic from earlier this year, but oh well!

Idols Begin to Get Into the Holidays

Ah, the holidays... The precious time between Halloween and the New Year.

The weather gets a little chillier, the fashion starts to skew to warmer clothing. People are, usually, in better moods. In general it's time for a bit of celebration.

I love the holidays. And apparently some stars love the holidays too. Such as actor Song Seung Hun and FT Island's Choi Jong Hun.

When I saw these guys post these pics up on Twitter, it made me smile and feel just a little bit more of the holiday spirit. And as the U.S. celebrates Thanksgiving this upcoming week, I'll be thanking the heavens for idols and actors.

A/N- I've FT Island'd This Blog

Been looking at my posts and almost everyone of them has something about FT Island or a member. Yikes! I need to write with more variety otherwise I will have to name this blog to be all about FT Island.

:-P

Commentary: Why FT Island?

If you've read my other posts, you will notice that I write a lot about FT Island. I am an unofficial Primadonna. Yep, I said it. They are one of my favorite artists right now.

Honestly, I used to be a die hard SS501 fan, and a big fan of Kim Hyun Joong. But when they "disbanded", it just wasn't the same anymore. They will always sound better as one to me, none of this solo activities crunk.

So...I started searching for another K-Pop group. Which was kind of hard to do since most of them danced to techno or cutesy music. Anyways, I was at home, sick, re-watching "You're Beautiful" starring the one and only Jang Geun Suk and Park Shin Hye. I was thinking of what a shame it was that Go Minam ended up with Hwang Tae Kyung instead of Shin Woo when the scene, where a karaoke singing Go Minam gets soaked up on stage, comes on.

To save a bit of face, one of the A.N.Jell members, Jeremy (Lee Hong Ki), takes over on "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer" and goes to stand next to Minam onstage. She is joined by Shin Woo (Jung Yong Hwa) and Tae Kyung (Jang Geun Suk) who wraps a tablecloth around the shivering Minam. Btw, that moment where he rips the tablecloth off the table is so gallant.

It got me thinking, Shin Woo and Jeremy actually sing pretty well. I wondered if they were multi-talented as well. So I did a bit of Google searching on them and found out that they were members of two groups (CNBlue and FT Island) under FNC Entertainment. Interesting that two FNC artists were acting together in the same drama.

This led me to a couple of their videos. CNBlue's "Oettoriya" (Loner) and "Jidokhagae" (Severely) by FT Island.

CNBlue's M/V of "Oettoriya" was a bit confusing for me, I don't think I got the concept as clearly as I would have liked. But the song was very catchy.

FT Island's "Severely" was a different story. Let me back up a bit and just say that the first thing I saw on YouTube for this M/V was a comment from a viewer saying "Noooo! Hong Ki!" or something to that effect. I thought, what the heck is this about?

I watched the video and I understood. Right from the beginning, that scratched in guitar intro had me hooked. The music was strong and powerful and the music video was so heart wrenching. I got immediately that Hong Ki's character was trying to go back in time to change things. (I wish he wouldv'e tried harder, but that's all moot now.)

I thought to myself, this is what I have been looking for. I was sick and tired of hearing the same sort of country and R & B and Pop music in American pop culture. Same songs that the stations feed us over and over and over. Blech!

Finally, there was a K-Pop group I could relate to. None of this dance club upbeat techno crunk. Their sound was unique, raw, real and downright emotional. I connected with their music on this level and also as a musician. They looked like they really loved what they did, that's something that's rarely seen in American music nowadays so I really appreciated that.

From there, I wanted to know everything about Lee Hong Ki, Choi Jong Hun, Lee Jae Jin, Choi Min Hwan and Song Seung Hyun. I read articles, I watched videos, listened to their music, watched them on variety shows. There was loads of information on the internet about them and they were hilarious! Just as I imagined a band of brothers would be. (Now granted, CNBlue was also all over the internet, but they weren't promoting as much at that time.)

All this while being sick in bed for a few weeks. Such a short time to convert, haha. In a way, I hated being sick, but in a way, I am glad I was. I found hope in music again.

FT Island, kahmsahabnida!

Lee Hong Ki Wants to Do Music He Wants to Do

FT Island Vocalist Lee Hong Ki
If there is one drawback to being a contracted star, it's the creative limitations put on you.

Lee Hong Ki, the lead vocalist for K-PopRock group FT Island, expressed his concern over being scared about not being able to produce the music that he would like to produce.

On the show, "Do Dream", he expressed that "The music I want to do and the music that the general public likes are different."

I would just like to say, that not everyone agrees with that sentiment. I am not sure if he's talking about the public in general or the audience in Korea, but I, for one, have many varied musical interests and I wouldn't mind hearing the type of music that he would like to put out. Not everyone likes to hear the mainstream stuff. In fact, fans get bored of hearing the same sound over and over. That's why FT Island has become so popular, their sound is different! Instrument playing K-Pop artists? Who would have thought? Not dance pop techno music? Awesome! Some of the biggest hits in music have come from artists that went against the mainstream likes. You never know until you put it out, Hong Ki.

Now, whether or not that is possible is a different story. Like I mentioned before, one of the drawbacks to being a star under contract is that you are limited by your contract. If FNC Entertainment says that he has to sing whatever they put in front of him, well, Hong Ki is sure out of luck.

I hope he will be able to come to a compromise with his agency if that's the case. And I hope he trusts fans, like myself, and will be able to put out music that he likes soon.

FT Island To Release New Japanese Album

South Korean K-PopRock group, FT Island, will be releasing a new Japanese album towards the end of November.

About a month ago, it was tweeted by lead vocalist Lee Hong Ki that he had called all the members over to do a bit of work. In the tweeted message was a photo of Song Seung Hyun and Lee Jae Jin in front of a computer hard at work at composing. Could this new album be the result of their efforts? Possibly so.

The single, "Polar Star" will be released on November 28th along with the full album. "Polar Star" is the group's 9th album in Japan.

Included on the album is a song composed by bassist, Lee Jae Jin called, "Fallin' For You" which he describes as a song about a man wanting to be close to his love. Another song, "Beautiful World" is a song composed by leader, Choi Jong Hun, who describes his song being about a man looking at his beautiful love.

I think the complexities and hardships of love work very well for these two. Isn't it quite a coincidence that they release these two songs about love after they have experienced break-ups of their own within the last year?

Here's the teaser again with the article that was released through Yahoo. I do not own the video, the credit goes to FT Island and Warner Music Japan.

Record Breaking Psy

Notch another accomplishment under Psy's belt.

This South Korean artist turned international superstar received a certificate from the Guinness World Book of Records for the Most Likes on his Gangnam Style M/V on YouTube!

It's one thing to break out of your own country and start a trendy dance move, but to be marked down in the Guinness World Book of Records is something entirely on its own! It's a book that many people have tried to get into, but only a rare few have accomplished.

This guy just keeps on breaking records and setting the bar higher for any South Korean artist. Honestly, I don't think that any artist from South Korea will even come close to the sensation that he has caused in just the span of a couple of months. It's just crazy! So much so, even our newly elected President claims he can do Psy's Gangnam Style dance!

Congratulations (축하 해요!) to Psy!

"Apple Girl" Kim Yeo Hee Makes News

It's been a while since I've heard about Kim Yeo Hee. Or, maybe I just wasn't paying enough attention cause I've been following CNBlue and FT Island practically non-stop. =D

But here she is again, making news.

If you don't remember her, she was a woman who had signed up to date a star on Mnet Scandal. Her boyfriend of one week was Lee Hong Ki, vocalist of K-PopRock group, FT Island. (Lucky girl) Although he ended up breaking her heart (really, did we think that they would end up together?) that didn't stop her in her dreams of becoming a star. She's been hard at work composing and practicing for her Japanese album, "Green or Red". And she just released a PV of one of the tracks on her new album called, "Raindrop".

To see it, go to the article by clicking the link here.

If you want to refresh your memory of her date(s) with Hong Ki, click on the video below. (I do not own the video, nope, no rights to it. I just like to watch the show.)

Enjoy!

FT Island's Jong Hun Cheers on SAT Takers

Although it doesn't apply to me anymore, I still think it's sweet when idols/stars/actors cheer on their fans as they prepare to take their SAT's.

It was cool to see that they even take SAT's in other countries. Yea, I've been pretty sheltered and I didn't know this till, like, this week. Lol.

I've been there, studying for the moment that will either make or break your life. (Sorry, a little dramatic.) I wish I had a sweet guy cheering me on to do my best. Like FT Island's Choi Jong Hun. =)

Choi Jong Hun tweets selca with a supportive message to fans taking SAT's. Source Choi Jong Hun's Twitter

Now, I dunno if I would be able to concentrate after seeing this. But I would certainly be smiling. =D

CNBlue Still On Hot Streak

Compounding on their successful concert stint in London, England, K-PopRock group CNBlue sold out their 8,000 Seoul concert "2012 CNBlue Live Blue Night in Seoul" within 10 minutes.

Yes, that's 1-0 minutos. For 8,000 seats. How many groups do you know that can do something like this? (Well, I can think of one other, but that's another story.) I don't even think that an American group would be able to pull this off. It is simply amazing!

A couple of years ago, these guys were just coming off of the streets of Japan. They were gigging on the streets. And now, they all have acting roles under their belts and are global stars. (At least, that's what the MAMA's are considering them as.)

These fans can't get enough of them. And they only have to wait a mere couple of months for their next album debut in January 2013. (I'm pretty excited about that!)

So proud of these guys. I hope they can continue this streak of theirs!

Go go go CNBlue!

2012 MAMA Voting

Voting has already started for the 2012 MAMA's (Mnet Asian Music Awards).

If you're into K-Pop/Rock as much as I am, please go and vote for your favorite groups/artists.

More votes mean more exposure for these artists. More exposure means that they will be noticed by others worldwide. When they're noticed worldwide, they can share their music. More sharing means more items being available to all!

Please go vote. I know there are those that are FT Island, CNBlue, Super Junior and Psy fans that pass through here. Currently FT Island is leading for Best Group Performance. CNBlue and Super Junior are both contenders for Best Global Group and Psy is in several categories such as Best Song, Artist of the Year and Dance Group of the Year.

Go and register to vote! Show your support!

Check it out here.

FT Island's "Love Sick" Covered by Lee Young Hyun

Veteran singer Lee Young Hyun covered "Love Sick", a popular tune from one of my favorite groups, FT Island on "I Am a Singer 2".

I am gonna be up front and just say it. I did not like the version at all. I felt it did not do the original justice. During the first verse I thought it started off nicely. But as the tempo picked up, it fell to pieces.

The tempo wasn't the issue for me. Let me be clear. The issue was the tone of the voice. It was just...screechy. No backing to it. I understand Lee Young Hyun is a veteran singer, and she packed emotion behind the lyrics for sure. But I have to shake my head at her tone. It was like nails grating over a chalkboard.*shiver*

Nonetheless, as an FT Island fan, I am happy she covered it. When singers cover other artist's songs, it is paying them a huge compliment. And I hope FT Island and Primadonnas are happy about that.

Here's the link to the performance below with the article that broke with the story on AllKpop. (As always, I don't own the video)

Jong Hun Snaps a Photo With Juniel

Pretty, talented and innocent FNC Entertainment artist, Juniel, broke onto the music scene this year and gave FNC it's first female solo artist. Showing off her talented guitar skills and teaming up with CNBlue's Yong Hwa, she proved she wasn't to be dismissed, that she was legit.

Choi Jong Hun, the leader of FNC's idol group FT Island, is currently finishing up promotions for their 4th Korean album "Five Treasure Box". Known for his impressive guitar and piano playing skills and flower boy face, he is showing the world that he can hold his own as a lyricist and composer as well.

Two talented young artists in their prime. Promoting under the same company. They're bound to run into each other at events and such.

But I wonder if their fans, especially Jong Hun's fans, would feel so comfortable? In a tweet Saturday, November 3rd, Jong Hun tweeted a picture of himself with Juniel.

"Pretty as always" Juniel and Choi Jong Hun
From what I could tell (translation and straight reading), he was complimenting Juniel by calling her "pretty". To which some fans responded with "you're an idiot", "Jong Hun...I will not let this go". Implying that his fans were uncomfortable with the closeness of the two in the pic.

On one note, they do make a fairly cute couple. On another note....well, Jong Hun...I can't say it's the smartest thing he has done. He doesn't have as much of a friendly reputation that CNBlue's Yong Hwa does. Because of his handsome looks, he's known as more the ladykiller. I can see why his fans wouldn't exactly be supportive. Jong Hun doesn't tweet pictures with women very often. In fact, I can only remember one instance within the past year and even then, fans tweeted back "ack! You're so close??" and "why are you close to each other?"

Although I agree that stars should be able to have their own lives. I would think by now that he would understand that he is still a very public figure. Even though it may have been a very innocent picture, many fans (including myself at first) may misunderstand at first glance.

I hope this doesn't escalate. Do readers feel the same?

Seolhyun Will Play Jung Shin's Girlfriend

Photo credit FNC Entertainment and AllKpop
I seem to remember not even a year ago, that a waif like girl by the name of Seolhyun graced an FT Island music video with her grace and style. (She was Lee Hong Ki's girlfriend in "Severely"). She played a young, aspiring dancer that was supposedly killed in one version of reality. Hong Ki goes back in time to try to prevent that from happening.

Fast forward to months later. Now, Seolhyun, with her newly debuted girl group, AOA (Ace of Angels) is working hard for their fan's appreciation. She's practicing hard and singing her heart out. And the group has a couple of singles under their belt to prove their worth in the industry.

Soon, Seolhyun will be flitting onto the screens of viewers all over again as it was announced that she has been cast in the drama, "My daughter Seoyoung". She will join CNBlue bassist, and fellow agency member, Lee Jung Shin on set and will play his girlfriend!

She's stated: “I’m really happy to be cast in ‘My Daughter Seoyoung’ because I watch it all the time. I worked really hard during the audition because I really wanted the role and I’m really happy because I got good results. I’m nervous because it’s my first drama, but I feel safe because I’ll be with Jungshin sunbaenim. He’s a big strength. I’m going to work hard and practice a lot.

She was certainly charming in "Severely". Let's see if she can continue that charm onto TV to help this drama succeed.

Korean Idols with the Legendary Steven Spielberg

If you've been to the movies, you will most likely have heard of a man named, Steven Spielberg.

Spielberg has been on numerous films (either as the director, script writer, producer, even actor) over the past, oh I dunno, 40 years?

"E.T. the Extraterrestrial", the famous shark movie "Jaws", his. "Indiana Jones" movies, yup that too. "Jurassic Park", "Transformers", heck yes. And, let's not forget the cartoon series "Animaniacs". Yes, I didn't know that either...

The man is legendary not only in the U.S., but Internationally as well. He's won numerous awards that I can't even begin to count on my toes and fingers.

Why am I mentioning this? Well, I had to build up the cred for the guy because I was insanely jealous when I saw who had snapped a pic with him recently: Psy and Super Junior's Siwon.

To meet someone on his status, to even be in the same room as he, is absolutely without a doubt, awesome!

Lucky guys...

Song Review: FT Island's "Stay With Me"

My third installment in a series of reviews on the songs off of FT Island's "Five Treasure Box" that came out last month.

The gist of it: This sounds like a K-Drama in a song. Woman loves man, but man is ignorant of her feelings. When woman decides to move on with her life, all of a sudden the man realizes he can't live without her, but it may be too late to hold onto her. Real, selfish love. Would you stay in this type of situation?

Breaking it down:
This is an upbeat and a real "driving" song. When I say "driving", I mean that it's constant drum beats mixed in with the frantic strumming of guitars.

My take on it: The instruments really go well with Hong Ki's voice. Together, the mood of the song is frantic and almost desperate. They both say, "don't go!".

Lyrics below.

 English Translation:

It’s so dark, it’s so cold, your eyes that are looking at me right now
I can’t touch you, I can’t hear you, I can’t feel anything
I guess I was surprised because I couldn’t see you
All day I cry, get tired and wake up
What do you want me to do? I said I can’t – I can’t let you go now
I was happy but I was happy alone
I didn’t know that you were hurting
I was in love but I was in love alone
I can’t do it, I can’t let you go
Stay with me
My throat is drying up, I am suffocating and I can’t stop my tears
Please don’t go, please stop – I am in pain and crying
I was happy but I was happy alone
I didn’t know that you were hurting
I was in love but I was in love alone
You said you loved me, that you have no one but me but now you feign ignorance
I loved you and I am missing you and I’m waiting for you alone
Stay with me

(Break)
Yes, I didn’t know but I wanted to hold onto my selfish love so I left you alone
I was happy but I was happy alone
I didn’t know that you were hurting
I was in love but I was in love alone
You said you loved me, that you have no one but me but now you feign ignorance
I loved you and I am missing you and I’m waiting for you alone
Stay with me

Video: FT Island's Relationships

FT Island's vocalist, Lee Hong Ki, tweeted a video from his account yesterday that I just wanted to share.

I think everyone who is a fan knows that the super popular members are Lee Hong Ki, Choi Jong Hun and Lee Jae Jin. In interviews, it was usually said that Jong Hun is the Casanova, which to this day he still vehemently states that he is not (it's not the image he's trying to portray).

Well..what if Jong Hun was telling the truth??

In this interview, Lee Hong Ki is actually the one with the most scandals. But the public normally doesn't hear about it because the agency keeps it mum.

I had to laugh at the embarrassment that Hong Ki was going through. And honestly, Jae Jin was also very funny with his impersonations. Also, who knew that Choi Min Hwan, their drummer, would be such a squealer??

Take a look at the video. If you can't understand Korean, one of the commentators left a link to a transcription of sorts to the video. Disclosure: I don't own the video and I do not claim any rights to it.

Enjoy!

Song Review: FT Island's "Your Words"

Here's my 2nd review of a song off of FT Island's "Five Treasure Box" album called "Your Words".

The gist of it: Near as I can tell from what I can read and of the translations, it's a song about patient love. A heartbroken person refusing to leave his/her love behind and move on.

Breaking it down:
It starts off with a bold guitar intro, setting the pace and tone. Light string picking and thrumming throughout the verses. A very emotional song, a song that is all too familiar with those that have loved.

My take on this:
Again, a very emotional song and one of my favorites on the album. Lee Hong Ki's voice carries the melody throughout with the same emotion, soaring through the chorus. The song itself is very repetitious, the chorus repeats at least four or more times with only a couple of verses. Frankly, this sound was what I was expecting to hear from FT Island, a more mature sound with loads of experience, and I certainly get that feeling here. However, I feel that younger listeners may get bored with it.

Here's the lyrics:

English Translation:

My expectations have become exhausted because of always waiting and longing
My hopes have been dulled because of these common tears and common hatred
My love has wandered through a long time and old memories
It grows dusty and faint so even without you, I can withstand it

I’ll never leave you, your faint words
I’ll never leave you, your discarded words
My broken heart, my clenched heart is breaking down and disappearing
I’ll never leave you, your forgotten words
I’ll never leave you, words I repeat by myself

Like tears that fall during pouring rain, it hazily disappears
I spent a day lingering by the same place, by the same path
I’m getting used to the cold moonlight that touches my cheek even without you

I’ll never leave you, your faint words
I’ll never leave you, your discarded words
My broken heart, my clenched heart is breaking down and disappearing
I’ll never leave you, your forgotten words
I’ll never leave you, words I repeat by myself
Like tears that fall during pouring rain, it hazily disappears

I’ll never leave you, your faint words
I’ll never leave you, your discarded words
My broken heart, my clenched heart is breaking down and disappearing
I’ll never leave you, your faint words
I’ll never leave you, your discarded words
My broken heart, my clenched heart is breaking down and disappearing
I’ll never leave you, your forgotten words

Song Review: FT Island's "I Wish" (Updated)

I told myself I would do a review on FT Island's "Five Treasure Box" album. But, after reflecting a little bit, I felt it was a little bit too long to put all of it into one post. Here is just a review of their title song, "I Wish" which they also have a music video out on.

The gist of it: A man wishes he was the object of a certain woman's affections.

Breaking it down:
The song starts off with an acoustic spanish style guitar lick which is intermingled with a lone, pure toned, trumpet playing in the background. At times the guitar and trumpet duel with each other in a call/answer type of style.

The melody is upbeat which I like, and I must say a total contrast to the lyrics which is full of angst and longing. The music (going along with the lyrics) starts a bit softly and timidly, swelling into a strong pop/rock style at the chorus when the rest of the members join in on their instruments.

My take on this:
It's an interesting song. Again, like I said in my review of the video, not as mature sounding as their previous title song, "Severely" (Jidokhagae) off of their "Grown Up" album. What I like about it is that it is very different from the cutesy techno pop dance music that is out there. It's the type of song that I would definitely play in my car (and have been since I got the album). And being that I'm not much of a dancer (I can move, but not as fluidly as some others), I am just fine doing my own kind of rocking out to this.

Bassist Lee Jae Jin surprises in a not so often heard rap in here. Usually Song Seung Hyun has the honor of doing the rapping. Jae Jin's voice continues to be softer and innocent in sound, his style is completely different from Seung Hyun's and contemporary English rapping which tend to be quicker and staccato.

Vocal Lee Hong Ki continues to impress with his husky voice during the verses and belting out strong during the chorus. As always, his voice packs emotion behind the lyrics.

Leader Choi Jong Hun always impresses with his deft guitar playing, as does Choi Min Hwan on the drums.

Although this isn't one of my favorites on the album, it definitely has what it takes to stick to people. It's catchy, it has a universal message, and the voice is awesome.

Here's the lyrics (both Romanized and English):

English Translation:

You’re so pretty, I want you
You’re so nice, I want you
I usually don’t look at girls but why am I acting this way, like a fool?
Every single day, I only think of you
Even when I close my eyes, I only think of you
Each time I see you, my heart trembles and I can’t breathe

Baby, I wish it was me, I wish it was so
Lonely lonely oh my love
I wish your love was me uh uh uh uh uh uh
Baby, I wish it was me, I wish it was so
Lonely lonely oh, love me
I don’t wanna be alone anymore uh uh uh I love you

Even when I’m meeting someone else, I only see you
Even when I’m thinking about something else, I only see you
Even when I see someone else, I have no interest
Why am I acting this way, like a fool?
I guess it’s love – I can’t catch a wink of sleep
I guess I love you – I keep thinking of you
When I meet you, I get happy like a kid

Baby, I wish it was me, I wish it was so
Lonely lonely oh my love
I wish your love was me uh uh uh uh uh uh
Baby, I wish it was me, I wish it was so
Lonely lonely oh, love me
I don’t wanna be alone anymore uh uh uh I love you

(Rap)
I love you, love me – believe me, believe me
I can do anything for you uh uh uh
No matter how much you try to find someone special
No matter how much you try to find someone like me, there won’t be anyone else
Can you see my heart? Can you hear my heart?
Please accept my pure love oh
I’m here, waiting and waiting for you
I only love you alone

Baby, I wish it was you, I wish it was so
Love me love me, oh look at me
I wish my other half was you uh uh uh uh uh uh
Baby, I wish it was you, I wish it was so
Love me love me, oh I love you
If it’s not you, I don’t wanna be in love uh uh uh I love you
Baby, I wish it was me, I wish it was so
Lonely lonely oh, love me
I don’t wanna be alone anymore uh uh uh I love you

CNBlue Rocks the House!

Jung Yong Hwa Courtesy of AllKpop

Boices and KPop fans were in for a treat October 20th and October 21st.

Korean Pop/Rock band, CNBlue, brought the house down in their last concert of their "Come On" tour 2012.

The tour included six cities and culminating at Japan's Saitama Super Arena. The tour in my opinion was a success being that it attracted more than 100,000 fans. That's hella good in a different country! Granted that these men practically live there since Japan is just a hop away from South Korea, but that's still awesome.

Fans that attended the event say that CNBlue leader, Jung Yong Hwa, looked really impressed at the amount of fans that came out to see them play.

Guitarist, Lee Jong Hyun, said:

"This year we had less music activities, but thanks to all of you who waited for us listening to our music, we could make arena tour. Thank you.

Even individual activities have been increasing recently, we really feel we are CNBLUE when all four of us hold live concerts. Let's make live concerts together from now on! Thank you very much!"

Lee Jong Hyun Courtesy of KPop Starz

The word on the street is that these guys are a lot more polished and put together than before. Perhaps it just took a little skip over to London to help them along.

I can feel that there are only greater things to come from these guys.

I absolutely love their style of music (along with FT Island's).

CNBlue! Keep rocking!

FT Island's Choi Jong Hun Shows a Little Skin

Yowza! Lean, not too thick, but still with a little definition. The normally body shy leader of K-PopRock group FT Island posed nude for a photo shoot. Just kidding!! He didn't pose nude, but he did do a photo shoot for "Elle Girl".

The theme was "Bubble Boy", in which he seems to charm the camera amidst all the pearlescent bubbles.

Seen in one photo released by the mag with a jacket over his shoulder and another with his shirt partially put on, I can only guess that fans all over will want to snatch this mag up when it hits newsstands in November.

Note: this is the same guy I pictured in my post about "Asian Stars Bulking Up Pt. 2".

FT Island Members Cheer on Hong Ki

As posted earlier on my blog, FT Island's Song Seung Hyun had taken on the role of "Daniel" in the musical "Jack the Ripper". Upon hearing of his role and during the performances, FT Island members such as Lee Hong Ki (lead vocals) and Choi Jong Hun (Leader and lead guitar) cheered him on and promoted his musical through their personal Twitter accounts.

Now, the tables are turned a little as Hong Ki is filming his new movie, due out in 2013.

Recently, Hong Ki tweeted a photo of himself with another member of the staff. (Cast or crew, not sure)

To this, Jong Hun replied "(you) look tired...".

Song Seung Hun also chimed in with a "Hong Gi brother, do your best..." from his own account.

It's good to see members supporting each other. After all, these guys live with each other day by day. They are each other's family away from home. It makes me happy to see that they still look out for each other. Even when they joke around on Twitter. Hehe.

Movie Review: Shanghai Calling

Daniel Henney at HIFF's Korea Night Reception 10/12/12. Photo Credit Nonstop Honolulu.

Disclosure: For those that haven't seen this movie- WARNING. This blog post contains spoilers.

Tuck another movie into Daniel Henney's belt. The one time fledgling model turned actor, supporting actor and then action hero is now a leading man.

He and director Daniel Hsia have pulled off a sweet romantic comedy about learning about one's own cultural identity and opening yourself up to receiving what life has in store for you.

Daniel Henney stars as a Chinese-American (American raised) New York lawyer named Sam Chao in Daniel Hsai's "Shanghai Calling". He is in one of the biggest deals of his life, one that could possibly make him a partner in his law firm, when things start to go south.

Sam is expecting a promotion, but instead of promoting him, the partners decide to send him to take care of the details with his client, personally, in Shanghai, China.

Needless to say, Sam is not thrilled. He arrives grouchy, a bit snappy, and basically puts Relocation Specialist, Amanda (Eliza Coupe), in her litty bitty place. After arriving at his swanky apartment, he is greeted by construction noise. He is, of course, not very pleased. He essentially tells her he'll be firing her if she doesn't get them to stop. And even goes as far as to throw his weight around. He hands her his business card and tells her to give that to the construction workers, to threaten that he will sue them if they continue. Pfft! As if! Any normal woman or person would have thrown that card back into his face. Handsome although it may be.

The movie follows Sam as he encounters different characters such as the Mayor of Americatown, played by Bill Paxton, (Think Chinatown, but the opposite.), Fang Fang his assistant, and quirky individual by the name of the "Awesome Wang". (absolutely not what you think)

He continually battles his way through the language barrier. Although he is Chinese, he speaks not one drop of it. But the ex-pats (Paxton and Coupe) all are able to. And he is in culture shock. He comes to learn that you're supposed to hand over your business card with both hands while bowing, "bao" (Steamed bun. Although I am not sure it was called this in the movie.) is a breakfast food and that privacy is obviously not an issue while sitting at a table in a restaurant with Awesome Wang, and are suddenly joined by five other people. Really, quite spontaneously.

He finds that everyone has to work hard for their money. Even his sophisticated looking assistant, Fang Fang, who moonlights as a waitress at a karaoke bar.  People pour 100% of themselves into what they do. And he realizes that he really needs to check his honesty gauge with other people. Some are only out for themselves and the hell to anyone else. He really comes to learn the human side of life. Filled with friends, laughter and loyalty. Something that he has obviously missed while working himself up the corporate ladder. And in essence, he becomes more human himself.

Daniel Henney with Hawaii Hermosas- Photo Credit Hermosa USA
Where's the romance? Well, while all of this is going on, he's trying to figure out his feelings for Amanda. He finds her interesting. She's an ex-pat that came to Shanghai for a fresh start, and she and her family have adapted their lifestyles to the Chinese culture. He is initially annoyed with her, but eventually grows to respect her, admire her, and eventually fall in love with her. In one scene, he even swoops in to save her from a creepy French guy she was set up with. (Insert a sigh here) Predictable, but cute nonetheless.

I've always liked movies that show the slightly different side of life. Especially, when it shows someone in a totally different environment. Hilarity almost always ensues. For example, in the movie, because Sam is unable to vocalize his needs in Chinese, he ends up paying money for a taxi cab ride that lasts for literally two seconds. He is also unable to converse with his live-in housekeeper. And he misunderstands Fang Fang's kind gestures of support as flirting. (Yeah, he was bit full of himself here.)

All in all, this is a cute movie. A bit slow in some areas, not too deep. But it has great characters and a good storyline. There's just a hint of humor, but nothing over the top (Jim Carey movies come to mind), and there's a touch of romance without any heavy lovemaking scenes. (Yes, you can be romantic without any sex scenes! Thank you Daniel Hsia!) It really makes you want to watch it over and over again. It's just clean, good, fun.

I had a chance to attend the premiere in Honolulu and there was a Q & A after with both Daniels (Henney and Hsia) and they mentioned that they've been receiving good feedback about the movie and they are looking into distribution. Yes! I can't wait.

Thank you Daniel and Daniel, and the rest of the cast and crew of Shanghai Calling, for putting out a quality movie with good values that's lots of fun. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I hope you will be able to team up again in the future. Looking forward to more great things from the both of you!

Shanghai Calling Movie

Daniel Henney's new movie, "Shanghai Calling", is premiering tonight at the Hawaii International Film Festival.
It is about a young Chinese American lawyer who is sent to China on business. There, he tries to settle himself into a foreign culture and work at the same time. And somehow, because this is a romantic comedy, somehow fall in love.

I'll be posting up a review and my thoughts on the overall experiences of the screening soon!

If you want to see another movie he's in, may I recommend X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Really cool movie!

Actor Daniel Henney Arrives in Hawaii

Korean American star, Daniel Henney (formerly of K-Dramas "My Name is Kim Sam Soon" and "Spring Waltz" and movie "X-Men Origins: Wolverine"), arrived in Honolulu, Hawaii Sunday night and was greeted by fans with smiles of aloha and leis. (the customary way of greeting someone or saying good-bye to someone in Hawaii is to present them with a flower lei)

Daniel tweeted on his arrival:

"Wow... So nice to see the fans here in Hawaii tonight!!"

Daniel is in town shooting a new episode of Hawaii Five-0 in which he will be playing the brother of his former "Three Rivers" co-star, Alex O'Loughlin.

Later this week, Daniel will also be attending the screening of his new movie, "Shanghai Calling" at the Hawaii International Film Festival on Friday, followed by the HIFF gala on Saturday at the Halekulani Hotel.

I hope he has a productive week. And I am sure fans of his will be trying to catch a glimpse of his stellar smile while he is here.

It's not very often that we Hawaii folk get to see International stars. It is always exciting!

Thanks for coming back Daniel, looking forward to seeing you in person and onscreen!

Note: 10/9/12- Daniel is back in LA shooting a commercial, but will be returning to Hawaii on Friday, 10/12/12.

Nichkhun Returns!

Fans all over have been waiting patiently for 2PM's Nichkhun to return from his voluntary leave of absence these past few months following his minor traffic incident.

Nichkhun has been reflecting deeply on his actions, but now, it looks like he has made some peace with himself and will now begin making his return to the public eye through a reality show called, "KOICA's Dream".

"KOICA's Dream" is a reality TV show that follows volunteers as they help those that are less fortunate.

The production staff specifically requested to have Nichkhun be a part of the show after hearing about his volunteer work at a children's hospital.

Nichkhun, along with 23 volunteers and five celebrities, are now in Tanzania shooting for the program. They will be helping residents in the area that have no electricity and no running water. Talk about survivorship!

I am happy for Nichkhun. It must've been hard to live with the scrutiny from his mistake. Hopefully he continues to reflect on his actions and make wiser choices.

Fans rejoice!

FT Island Sentimental at Fan Event

I wanted to share this article that I saw tonight on AllKpop.

It was about, one of my fave's, FT Island, at their latest fan signing event at Youngdeungpo Times Square.

What immediately caught my eye was how happy the fellas looked. They were smiling genuinely, it seems, and they were even acting a little bit silly. (Hong Ki was wearing a black and purple polka dotted bat head band. Perfect for Halloween!) Indeed they looked like they were having a good time.

They later commented: It was fun and great to meet that many fans up close. We are so thankful to our fans who always worry about us and give us so much love“.

So sweet... I'm sure their Korean fans in attendance were very happy.
